Is It a Heart Attack or a Panic Attack?

Many people have rushed to an emergency room thinking they were having a heart attack only to be told they were having an anxiety attack. Medical professionals say it can be difficult to tell the difference so if you think you are having a heart attack, seek immediate medical help as time can make a difference in your recovery.

The Medical News Today goes over some of the signs of heart attacks as well as panic attacks. Heart attacks typically include: chest pain, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting and sweating. They explain in a heart attack the pain may resemble pressure or a squeezing sensation. It often starts in the center of the chest and may radiate from the chest to the arm, jaw or shoulder blades. While women experience symptoms of angina during a heart attack, they also frequently suffer from shortness of breath, nausea/vomiting, and back or jaw pain. 

During a panic attack, pain is typically centered in the middle of the chest and is sharp or stabbing. Doctors say test such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood tests, allow a doctor to make an accurate diagnosis.

Both panic attacks and heart attacks tend to come on suddenly, with panic attacks often occurring during times of extreme stress. Heart attacks can come after physical exertion such as climbing stairs or shoveling snow. In a panic attack, pain gets better over time (usually in 20 to 30 minutes). Getting Enough Sleep May Protect Us from Dementia

Researchers report sleeping less than five hours a night can increase our risk for dementia. The journal Aging published a study done over a period of five years that supported earlier research by finding people who slept less than five hours a day were at greater risk for dementia. The study looked at the sleep patterns of 2,600 people over the age of 65. 

Participants who slept less than five hours a night had almost double the risk of being diagnosed with dementia over the course of the study from those who slept seven to nine hours a day. Another risk factor was poor quality of sleep or taking more than 30 minutes to fall asleep. There was also a greater risk of dying for the poor sleepers. 

While this study involved people over 65 years of age and took place over a handful of years, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently published a study involving people in their 50s and 60s. It found those who slept six hours or less per night were more likely to develop dementia later in life. Participants were interviewed on six occasions between 1985 and 2016 about how many hours they slept each night. For accuracy, some participants “wore accelerometers to objectively measure sleep time. Over the course of the study, 521 participants were diagnosed with dementia, at an average age of 77.” Other studies report the risk for dementia is increased in people who sleep more than nine hours a night.

A cup of cherries (about 21) has 90 calories, three grams of fiber, and is a good source of potassium and vitamin C. “Cherries are also a great source of anthocyanins, which offer antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, cardiovascular and other benefits.” Research has found cherries can improve sleep and help relieve gout.

The next group of some of the season’s favorites is various garden fresh, leafy greens. These include lettuce, arugula, watercress, spinach, kale and romaine. Studies show leafy greens can help lessen the risk of heart disease, macular degeneration, cancer and other conditions. Not only do they taste good but are easy to add to a variety of foods.  

Studies find strawberries are another superfood and provide a range of antioxidants, vitamin C, potassium and fiber. They are easy to eat by as is or can be added to a variety of dishes. 

Not only do summer tomatoes taste better but experts say the tomatoes we buy now are actually superior to tomatoes we buy during the rest of the years. They are a good source of vitamin C and lycopene, “a potent antioxidant that helps protect your eyesight, provides anti-cancer properties and heart health benefits.” The last food the article mentioned is watermelon, which is typically a requirement at any summertime gathering. Watermelon is a great way to rehydrate as it is 92% water; and like tomatoes, it too contains the beneficial lycopene.

Should You Tell a Loved One they have Alzheimer’s?

A diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is not only difficult for the person but affects their spouse, children, other family members and anyone who cares for them. However experts say it is important to remember the person is most affected, and if they ask you what is wrong, you should be honest and simple tell them. It may even give the person a sense of relief to know they are not insane and there is an explanation as to what is happening to them.

Alzheimer’s Research is Working to Improve Lives

In a recent article from Medical News Today, experts explain the various areas dementia research is focused on including: “understanding how the condition works, why it develops, and how it might be treated. Importantly, there is also a focus on how we can improve the lives of people with dementia.” 

Dr. Kellyn Lee, a chartered psychologist and research fellow in aging and dementia at the University of Southampton, in the U.K., is one researcher focused on trying to improve the lives of those suffering from dementia. Her program, called the “Material Citizenship Framework Project,” is being used to demonstrate to staff working with dementia patients just how important patients’ possessions and identities are to their wellbeing. Dr. Lee says in one case an Alzheimer’s patient was distressed at not recognizing herself. It turns out before her illness; she dyed her hair and didn’t recognize the woman in the mirror with gray hair. Personal possessions can help people to connect with and help maintain their identity. Dr. Lee explains, “Losing access to frequently used possessions can cause disempowerment and confusion. To observers, this confusion can sometimes seem like dementia progression.”

Another group of researchers are working to improve the lives of people in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s with the development of HUG comforters. These soft blankets have weighted limbs, a heartbeat and the ability to play the person’s favorite music. Studies show a HUG can help reduce anxiety and agitation, and embrace the person in a soft hug. 

In the on-going race for effective treatments for Alzheimer’s, some researchers are looking at repurposing certain drugs. One example is a drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. Metformin has shown to improve symptoms in Alzheimer’s patients in a small clinical trial but more studies need to be done. Others are studying the connection between cardiac disease and Alzheimer’s and how decreased blood flow adversely impacts our brains.

Certain Medications are Associated with an Increased Risk for a Fall

The Center for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) reports 36 million older adults fall each year—resulting in more than 32,000 deaths. Of those falls, 3 million seniors are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries; and one out of every five falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury. With these alarming statistics, experts say it is important for seniors to know their risk for a fall including whether they are taking medications associated with an increased risk. 

The first step is to talk to your doctor to see if you are taking one of these medications, as medications are the most common reason for falls. Furthermore experts say adjusting or making a change in medication is the easiest thing to do to help prevent a fall. If it is determined you are taking a medication like one known to cause light-headedness, dizziness, sudden drop in blood pressure, or chronically low blood pressure or hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), you and your healthcare team can regularly re-evaluate your need and dosage. 

Another way to mitigate your risk for a fall is to do exercises designed to improve leg strength and balance. In addition be sure to get an annual eye exam and update your glasses as needed. The Best Exercises for Older Adults

While we know exercise is good for us, certain ailments can make it more challenging for some seniors.
