5 TIPS TO KEEP YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
According to a poll conducted by the international online research group YouGov, about 30 percent of American adults drafted a list of New Year’s resolutions as they headed into 2024. Of the American adults who drafted New Year’s resolutions for 2024, just 36 percent of the respondents stated that they expected to stick with their goals throughout the remainder of the year.
Devising a game plan for the upcoming year represents an effective strategy to achieve personal and professional goals. Let’s take a look at five tips to keep your New Year’s resolutions for not only 2024, but also for every year that follows.
The Fewer, The Better
It is tempting to write down a long list of goals to attain for the upcoming year. However, to reach the goals that you set for yourself, you should be highly selective in the ones that you choose. You might want to lose weight, volunteer at several organizations, and spend more time with loved ones, but there are only so many hours in each day.
Choosing too many goals to attain sets you up for failure. Write down your goals, and then prioritize them to whittle the list down for a final draft.
Be Specific
Let’s say one of your top priorities for the upcoming year is to lose weight. Although a popular goal to achieve, simply setting a resolution to lose weight is not enough to reach your lofty goal. You should specify how much weight you want to lose. Just make sure your specified weight loss is a realistic goal to attain.
For example, you can strive to lose 50 pounds over the next 365 days.
Establish a Plan
For each of the resolutions on your list, you should create a plan to achieve the resolutions. For the weight loss goal, write down how you plan to lose weight, such as cutting down on carbohydrates and joining a fitness center. Each resolution should also include a separate document that describes how you plan to get where you want to go.
Revisit Your Resolutions
You save a document listing your New Year’s resolutions just a few hours before the clock strikes midnight to usher in 2024. Fast forward to December 31, 2024, and you have not checked your list at any point during the past 365 days. A list of New Year’s resolutions is not meant to be etched in stone.
In fact, you can expect to change some of your resolutions, as well as add a few to the list as 2024 unfolds. Revisit your New Year’s resolutions every couple of months to make the appropriate changes.
Have Someone Hold You Accountable
Although you hold the key to achieving your goals over the next year, having someone holding you accountable for achieving your resolutions can help you stay on track. Whether it is a spouse, close friend, or trusted professional peer, an accountability partner helps you stay motivated on the days when motivation is hard to find.
